Republicans Continue to Make a Mockery of Themselves in Handshake Hour Speeches

By: Evan Sporkin

After this week’s handshake hour on Wednesday, the electorate may have started to notice a recurring theme. Republicans simply cannot match the left when it comes to speeches. Previously, their crisis responses and platforms have been lackluster, to say the least, and unfortunately, their speeches from Wednesday are no different.

Writing about Maurice McDonald at this point is basically beating a dead horse, but so long as he is digging his own grave, I will assist with writing these articles. However, it actually seemed that he did not lose his voters on Wednesday, or should I say, voter, as it was in the first poll. Regardless, his speech was yet again underwhelming. His speaking seemed un confident and shaky, almost like he hadn’t read his speech before the event. Not only that, but McDonald definitely didn’t sound like he wanted more voters. McDonald continued to attack other candidates who dwarfed his voter numbers in the polls, and didn’t do much to outline new policies that may increase his popularity.

That brings us to Sarah Smith. I will concede that Smith does not suffer from the same speaking problems that McDonald does. She seems confident, enthusiastic, and at the very least, believes in what she says. That being said, the content of her speech fell victim to similar problems that her platforms and other written components fell to. The phrasing of her speech almost made it feel like she was making a joke of herself, throwing out completely ridiculous suggestions. Her speech lacked critical thinking and explanation as to how what she is doing will help America, and similar to her platforms, did not lay out much explicit policy.

The scheduling of all 4 candidate speeches one after another provided an excellent example of juxtaposition, between the well thought out liberals, and conservative candidates who simply cannot be taken seriously. Smith, however, does deserve kudos for being the most popular candidate in the most recent polls, but I will end with this question. How?
