Which Democratic Candidate’s Tax Policy is Right for You?

By: Lucas Resnik

Although many political platforms come and go, one has remained the same throughout the entire history of the United States: taxes. As the campaigns continue to evolve and set down their platforms, it is important for all Americans to understand what their politicians are advocating for, starting with their taxes. The many possibilities of methods of taxation, and its intertwining relationship with government funding, and therefore overall policies, make an analysis of taxation an excellent indicator of overall policies set forth by each of the candidates.

Amanda Davis:

Davis has a traditional liberal policy on taxation with a unique spin. While not just saying she is going to tax the rich, Davis has a plan, investing in public education. By putting the money back into education, she is promoting a more sustainable future, as a better educated nation is a richer nation. Davis is also one of the strongest environmental advocates in the country, and this is reflected in her tax policy. Davis plans to add a carbon emission tax, which would combat climate change in two ways. First, it would incentive a decrease in carbon emissions from companies in America, rewarding them for rewarding the environment. Secondly, the money gained from this tax would be reinvested back into programs that combat climate change, another win for mother nature.

Julia Swift:

Swift again goes with a liberal tax policy, although hers is more a traditional liberal stance. Swift is planning on an increased tax on the wealthy, of up to 70%. By doing this, Swift is attempting to create a more fair economy for all. In a recent statement, Swift’s team said that “Our mission isn't to increase revenue, it is to decrease income inequality in our country today.” By increasing taxes on the wealthy, Swift’s hope is to make the country a more equal place for all.

Conclusion:

Both liberals have strong, specialized tax policies for their base. If your biggest issue is environmentalism, you will prefer Amanda Davis’ policy, as it strongly intertwines taxes with support for the environment. However, you more strongly care about economic equity, then you should support Julia Swift, as her policy focuses on giving everyone an equal opportunity.
